Massacre Rocks through Devils Gate

Four of five met their fate

Shoshone rise, American Falls

Last thing they heard was a battle call

Register Rock shows those who came

In volcanic rock they etched their names

Wagons filled with all they own

Seeking land where the natives roam

Emigrant trails to Oregon homes

Littered with the blood and the fallen bones

Right of passage price was paid

Built upon the foundation that they laid

When newspaper men editorialize

Writing what becomes history 'fore our very eyes

Legends are made from the exaggerated lies

Facts be damned, becomes our heritage prize

Massacre Rocks through Devils Gate

A story told to stir up fear and hate

Copyright 2024 Kevin Snyder, All Rights Reserved

In August of 1862, there were a series of skirmishes between bands of Shoshone Indians and emigrant wagon trains on the California and Oregon trails in the vicinity of a volcanic feature known as Devil’s Gate in southeastern Idaho. Although the number of lives lost heavily favored the emigrants, newspapers at the time called the attacks a “massacre” and demanded the government take action. In 1912, a newspaperman promoted rebranding the Devil’s Gate as “Massacre Rocks” to draw tourists and capitalize on the dramatic legends of massacred emigrants. This song was inspired by these events.

I've been up, I've been down, I've been kicked around

It's just the same old thing

I've been stuck in a rut going off my nut

Doin' the same old thing

When it comes to you, my feet are stuck in glue

It's just the same old thing

I keep hanging on, but are we too far gone

In this same old thing

You push me away

We're like a leaky old boat I try to keep afloat

It's just the same old thing

I keep bailing fast, not sure how long I can last

Doin' the same old thing

I'm tired of thinkin' I can keep us from sinkin'

In the same old thing

The last time I checked we were up to our necks

In the same old thing

You push me away

I look in the distance and see a bright future

Where everything's happy and new

My frown's upside down off this merry-go-round

I keep spinning around with you

So, that's how it goes

So, I think you should know

That I'm moving on from doin' the same old thing

And trying something new

I'm stepping away

Yeah I'm stepping away

Because you pushed me away

You pushed me away

Follow me down to the river

Out the pier and to my boat

Shadows cast upon the water

They speak of doubt

Follow me into the mountains

Up the trail and to the lake

We'll watch the sunset on the ridge line

Bring on the night

Should I lay you down or let you run away

Let my chips fall where they may

If you stay, and should you follow me

My doubts and fears would be belaid

Follow me into the city

Bask in the glow of the neon lights

Never quiet, always moving

It never sleeps

Should I lay you down or let you run away

Let my chips fall where they may

If you stay, and should you follow me

My doubts and fears would be belaid

Follow me on one more journey

Moving silent beyond the veil

Always quiet, always peaceful

In eternal rest

Won't you follow me

Follow me, oh follow me

Won't you follow me

Follow me, oh follow me

New song releasing August 16, 2024. Kevin found a chord progression that he liked while messing around with the baritone acoustic guitar. Soon the little "Follow me" hook led to a fanciful story of finding and pursuing love.

Well I put my mind in recall mode

Not so very long ago

I was thinking 'bout a girl that I used to know

I was thinking 'bout the hurt inside

And thinking 'bout the nights I cried

When everything she told me was a lie

So I drifted down into no man's land

I was sifted through like hour glass sand

Nights I was so drunk I could not stand

Now I'm looking, to my future

I'm looking, to lose my past

I'm looking, to my future

I'm looking, to lose my past

To lose my past

Now I'm walking down a winding road

Looking for a place to go

I'll try to find a place that I can call my own

I know that I'll find it one day

I'll find a job and earn my pay

And I'll leave her memory far, far away

And maybe I'll find somebody new

Maybe raise a child or two

And we'll live off the golden sun and the morning dew

Now I'm looking, to my future

I'm looking, to lose my past

I'm looking, to my future

I'm looking, to lose my past

To lose my past

Should your path find a forest of ancient tall trees

Should your eye catch a river of stones gone astray

Should you ever hear the wild wind that weakens your knees

You should know you have found my one hideaway

One isn't coming, one is long gone

The others are lost, can't find a way

I cannot help them, I tried but I failed

I was lost in that one hideaway

Don't know the Why, but the How and the When

Are clear to me now, you've got my attention

Don't know the path but I must know the way

It brings me back to my one hideaway

I think the distance is three steps away

I know direction is too hard to say

I hope distinction is my one hideaway

Run Down — Miss the Attention

Walk Down — Two steps away

Lay Down — Too late to mention

Stay Down — One Hideaway

Run Down — Hideaway

Walk Down — Hideaway

Lay Down — Hideaway

Stay Down — Hideaway

One isn't coming, one is long gone

The others are lost, can't find the way

I cannot help them, I tried but I failed

I was lost in that one hideaway

I was lost in my one hideaway

Hideaway, Hideaway

Hideaway, Hideaway

Hideaway, Hideaway

Hideaway, Hideaway

Well I've been out drinking and thinking of you

I can't help but wonder what you've been up to

Have you been drinking and thinking of me

Well that's wishful thinking, I know it can't be

Daylight is harsh, adds to the pain in my head

Along with the echoing tones, are the words you never said

Well this seems familiar, I've been here before

It was the last time you knocked on my door

I see you there, it begins my downfall

Forever, completely, at your beck and call

Fate can be harsh, when it comes to the hand it dealt me

Stars will never cross, lovers will never be

Well you got me believin, so I keep deceiving

Myself, thinking everything's fine

I abandon all reason, I'm on my knees pleading

And hoping you'll give me a sign

When I close my eyes, you're all that I see

I know in my heart I can never be free

But should you come looking I'll leave you this clue

I'll be out drinking and thinking of you

I'll be out drinking and thinking of you

I'll be out drinking and thinking of you

When she arrives, you know it's good news

Don't have to wallow in the sorrow of the woman on the evening news

Bring a little light, a bright little tune

The problems of the hour take a turn inside my little room

I've got it here, I've had it all the time

No more cryin and denying, no more walkin on the very thin line

Now I see what I see, I know it's a lie

I know I'm lookin under but the rolling distant thunder is mine

You're brighter than sunshine

You're better than moon shine

You shimmer like stars shine

You're brighter than sunshine

You're better than moon shine

You shimmer like stars shine

You're brighter than sunshine

You're better than moon shine

You shimmer like stars shine

You're brighter than sunshine

You're better than moon shine

You shimmer like stars shine

You're brighter than sunshine

I was somewhere south of Reno

When the snow began to fall on the ground

There's no tellin' where you'll be in a week or two

When I come back around

It feels just like tomorrow

Is the longest darkest day of the year

And that seems to be the force from within

That pushed me away from here

I got tacos on the seat

Monkey Lizards on the vox in my car

Rain clouds on my six

But rainbows up in front, and not too far

I'm all in

I'm all in

I'm all in

I'm all in

You asked if we could have

Some fun, while you got back on your feet

Now the answer that eludes me

Is somewhere down this lonesome street

The road before me shines

Like a silver dollar in the sun

And the storm clouds at my back

Remind me that you're the only one

I'm all in

I'm all in

I'm all in

I'm all in

I can't be the one

Who stays and you call friend

So you'll find me in the town

Where the road and sidewalk both end

I'm all in

I'm all in

I'm all in

I'm all in

No tea to spill for this track!

Mama warned about the End Times

Red, white black and pale equestrines

Huntin' down the most deserving souls

War and death and something else

Like conquest or the path to hell

I wasn't really listening, truth be told

But now things feel apocalyptic

Sheltered here binge watchin' Netflix

Cause I don't pay for Starz or HBO

There's something far too small to see

It surely coming after me

And all the world, and that's our tale of woe

Well it's Crazy Times we're livin' in

When it started, how it ends

No one knows, and no one can foresee

But I'll be here to hold the fort

Put out the cat, turn hard aport

When all them zombies come runnin' after me

When all them zombies come runnin' after me

I ain't worried 'bout no Rapture

Just cause some things can't be captured

And Costco's out of water and TP

Them's things we won't need no more

Though I did stop off at the liquor store

Just in case, ya know, it's best to wait and see

You know my mama also said

In those days when we're all dead

Well reckoning's a bitch, I think that's true

So love all others as yourself

Have faith in sickness and in health

They matter most when judgment comes to you

And it's Crazy Times we're livin' in

When it started, how it ends

No one knows, and no one can foresee

And when I go, I'll hug the missus

Turn around and blow 'em kisses

When all them zombies come runnin' after me

When all them zombies come runnin' after me

No tea to spill for this track!

Shake my hand 'cuz I'm the man that shot him dead

I took my gun and just because put a bullet in his head

I know I'll burn in hell

For this mortal sin

Shake my hand 'cuz I'm the man that did him in

She was walking home one night from the corner store

He raped her and he stabbed her then she was no more

To the D.A. his friends all said

That he was somewhere else

Shake my hand 'cuz I took him out all by myself

He was living proof that evil walks the earth

Is 20 bucks and change what a life is worth?

When the justice system failed

He heard my magnum sound

Shake my hand 'cuz I'm the man that put him down

Now I'm hiding from the law that wants to take me in

Vigilante justice is considered fringe

But I stand by what I did

And that's what I'm all about

Shake my hand 'cuz I'm the man that took him out

I knew that they would catch me, just a matter of time

A jury of my peers found me guilty of the crime

And when that pellet drops

I won't be here for you

To shake my hand for doing what I had to do

Shake my hand 'cuz I'm the man that shot him dead

Bless the sun, all you people

Headed for salvation around the sun you make me feel this way

Lighter day dreams for you people

Lord knows we can [use it from time to time to make us feel okay

Now and then, you may be saddened

I can help that feeling, make it go away

And you'd be smiling, maybe laughing

If you could see what I see in the sun by the light of day

Why don't you tell me your fears?

And find a path to higher understanding

Little interaction through these years

But the sun will shine where your standing

Bless the sun, all you people

Headed for salvation around the sun you make me feel this way

Lighter day dreams for you people

Lord knows we can [use it from time to time to make us feel okay

Why don't you tell me your fears?

Babe, you know that I love you

And you've been a true blue friend

I'd follow you to the ends of the Earth

And then follow you home again

You are the kind of person

That everyone longs to be

But now I'm caught off-guard with your request

Why would you ask such a thing of me

No, no, no

I ain't gonna do that

No, no, no

No matter how many times you ask

No, no, no

Won't you please leave me alone

How many times do I have to tell you

No, no, no

I've kept so many promises

And yes, I've been keeping score

It seems no matter how much I do for you

You always ask for more

But a man has got his limits

And now you have reached mine

So listen closely to what I've got to say

I'm saying no for the very last time

No, no, no

I ain't gonna do that

No, no, no

No matter how many times you ask

No, no, no

Won't you please leave me alone

How many times do I have to tell you

No, no, no

I may not be perfect, but I'll always be myself

I've given all I can give, my love, time and wealth

Don't take me for granted and just put me on a shelf

No, no, no

I ain't gonna do that

No, no, no

No matter how many times you ask

No, no, no

Won't you please leave me alone

How many times do I have to tell you

No, no, no

I'm telling you no, no, no

I'm telling you no, no, no

In these precious few moments

In the twilight of life

You can see all the reasons

I have to set sail tonight

Been away for all these years

Left alone with my deepest fears

Now I know what's deep in me

You've exposed for me to see

I've seen the king of pain today

Harbinger of a dead man playing

I've seen the king of pain today

You're in control of what your saying

Now I know my secret

I've grown older today

Now I know the heartache

Of all the souls that remain

I've seen the king of pain today

No escape in children playing

I've seen the king of pain today

You're in control of what your saying

Putting a worm on my fishing pole's hook

Hoping for a big old trout from a itty bitty brook

That childhood memory is clear as can be

But them good old days are long gone for me

A warm sleeping bag in my Mom's front yard

Me and my friends sleeping underneath the stars

So many stars and satellites to see

But them good old days are long gone for me

I'd gather pop bottles from the side of the road

To a kid like me they were as good as gold

Trade 'em in for money over at Kelly's store

But them good old days they are no more

Them good old days, them good old days

I love to reminisce about them good old days

The best part is and I'm here to say

Today I'm making new good old days

Late at night I'd be lying in my bed

Transistor radio pressed to my head

Only station I'd get was K I D

But those good old days are long gone for me

Winter time finds me at the snow covered dunes

Sliding down on an inner tube from dawn 'till noon

A quick lunch break then back on the hill

Them good old days gave me such a thrill

Them good old days, them good old days

I love to reminisce about them good old days

The best part is and I'm here to say

Today I'm making new good old days

Learning guitar from my brother Paul

John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, John Prine et al

All those songs we still play today

That good old music is here to stay

Them good old days, them good old days

I love to reminisce about them good old days

The best part is and I'm here to say

Today I'm making new good old days

Them good old days, them good old days

I love to reminisce about them good old days

The best part is and I'm here to say

Today I'm making new good old days

Blue loss, come my way

Cool frost, where I lay

Lost wind, feel it comin

Turn the shoulder, a storm to summon upon

Ahh, One mourning day

Red seize, come to fall

Warm breeze, caught us all

Hot talk, pay attention

Turn another, a lost intention upon

Could be another mourning day

Cool down, come on and just cool down

Cool down, why don't you just cool down

It's the same old words my friend, come around again

In another time, in another place

So cool down, cool down

Theres better days, next time around

White hall, bought for you

They all thought so too, if we move now

It can all come down

And hey, there's a cool wind comin' round

Cool down, why don't you just cool down

Cool down, come on and just cool down

Cool down, why don't you just cool down

Cool down, come on and just cool down

Cool down, why don't you just cool down

Cool down, come on and just cool down
