Although the number of lives lost heavily favored the emigrants, newspapers at the time called the attacks a “massacre” and demanded the government take action. In 1912, a newspaperman promoted rebranding the Devil’s Gate as “Massacre Rocks” to draw tourists and capitalize on the dramatic legends of massacred emigrants. This song was inspired by these events. |
